Predefined level limits for reliable pump control

The combination of Waterpilot FMX21 hydrostatic level probe and FlexView FMA90 control unit provides operators with a reliable and easy‑to‑use monitoring solution for raw water basins in potable water treatment plants. Accurate level measurement enables automatic pump control and helps maintain stable inflow conditions for downstream treatment processes, while integrated temperature monitoring provides additional process insight. Clear visualization of measurement data, event logging and automatic limit‑based pump control help reduce manual intervention while increasing operational visibility and traceability across the entire treatment process.

The challenge: Stable level control in raw water basins for potable water treatment

Raw water basins used in potable water treatment plants place high demands on level and temperature measurement. These basins often handle groundwater or surface water that is further treated in downstream process steps such as filtration or UV disinfection. To ensure stable operation of these treatment stages, continuous monitoring of the raw water level is essential, while temperature values provide additional insight into raw water conditions and process stability.

At the same time, many raw water basins are remotely located or only periodically attended. Operators must reliably prevent overflow and dry running of pumps while ensuring stable inflow to downstream treatment processes. In addition, all components used in potable water treatment must meet strict hygiene requirements and comply with applicable potable water regulations. This requires robust measurement technology that delivers consistent results and supports transparent, well‑documented operation.

Our solution: Smarter control of raw water basins

A simple start to smarter control is achieved through the combination of Waterpilot FMX21 and FlexView FMA90. In raw water basins used for potable water treatment, Waterpilot FMX21 provides accurate hydrostatic level and temperature measurement, ensuring reliable monitoring even under changing process conditions. With its robust, oil‑free ceramic measuring cell and drinking water approvals, the sensor ideal for long‑term use in potable water treatment environments.

Measured values are transmitted to FlexView FMA90, which acts as the central visualization and control unit. FlexView FMA90 enhances the sensor and brings every insight into clear view by continuously displaying level and temperature values on a single, intuitive touch display. The data can also be communicated via digital communication interfaces such as HART or Modbus TCP to higher‑level systems, enabling transparent monitoring and easy integration into existing control systems. For secure integration into modern water treatment infrastructures, FlexView FMA90 was developed according to IEC 62443‑4‑1 secure product development requirements.

An additional digital input can be used for access detection, capturing and documenting any opening of access or inspection covers directly in the event logbook. When predefined minimum or maximum level limits are reached, FlexView FMA90 automatically generates switching signals to start or stop pumps. This supports stable raw water handling and helps prevent dry running or overflow through automated limit-based pump control, while supporting consistent operation of downstream treatment steps such as UV disinfection.
